Artist’s
Statement For many
years I have enjoyed photographing the research collections of the Cleveland
Museum of Natural History. Over the past
few years my work at the museum has taken a new and exciting direction: I have
begun using an X-Ray machine in the department of Physical Anthropology as my
camera. In making these images I am
making what amounts to an X-Ray photogram.
I place the material directly on the loaded packet of X-Ray film and
then make the exposure. I use the X-Ray
machine to photograph the internal structures of plant and insect material in
order to capture images that reveal the beauty of natural forms usually
invisible to the eye. In a wonderful
marriage of science and art, an unseen microcosm emerges from within the
complexity of botanical forms. What is
predictable, common and familiar is transformed into a world of newly
discovered pleasures.
